A few more weeks have gone by and we’re really seeing progress!  The banana peels have turned black and some of the older ones are naturally breaking up (disintergrating!)   There’s a rich soil at the bottom.  I had to add some dry to go along with the bag of egg shells and fruits.  Minimal fruit flies.. and no foul odor.   Here’s a photo, after adding a little potting soil to the new layer.

We’re now into week #2 of our new homemade composter

<website link to make one of your own – http://crafts.kaboose.com/compost-bin.html >

So glad to report that things are starting to ‘cook’!   To help balance the moisture, we add dry leaves.  This also helps to manage the fruit flies when they overcome.  There’s absolutely no offensive odor.   During the first week, we included oranges, banana peels, and other fruits and vegetable scraps that are no longer recognizable.

What are we composting?

  • Egg shells
  • Banana peels
  • Scraps from other fruits and vegetables during cooking process
  • Hair (check your brushes lately?)
  • *Dryer Lint – while this can be composted, instead I line these over branches for the birds to use
  • Tea Bags
  • Stale Bread
  • Plant trimmings (dead rose blooms, leaves, etc.)
  •  Dry leaves, grass clippings, and other organic outdoor
  • Kleenex, Qtips (not plastic sticks!)  <– may sound a little *gross but why throw them in the garbage can?
  • Kitchen scraps (example: unused amounts of mashed potatoes – okay with small amounts of milk or rice)
  • Electric razor trimmings
  • Vacuum cleaner contents (remove anything plastic that may be captured)
  • Pencil shavings
  • Liquid from canned vegetables (or Steamed bag vegetables)

*Because we back to a nature preservation, I will be more cautious of what I compost, due to the animals that a composter may attract..
